How much does a 4G phone plan cost around the world?

Complaining about the cost and service of a wireless phone plan is global pass-time; it seems no one is ever really happy with what they are currently paying for.

But maybe your phone plan isn't as expensive as it seems, especially when you compare it to similar plans from across the world.

Disable WiFi scanning to extend battery life, for Android

Most people think that when it comes to saving battery byswitching WiFi setting there are two options: enabled and disabled. Actually, theres a third. You can leave WiFi enabled, so that you can still connect to aWi-Fi network, but disable your phones tendency to be always-scanning for newnetworks.

An easy trick to make apps go faster on your Android

On certain Android devices, there is an easy way to switchsome settings around to make apps open and close faster. Its called ART, whichstands for Android Run Time. This is a new runtime system that will eventuallyreplace the current default one (called Dalvik) as Android moves forwards. Itscurrently in early stages, so switching to it is not without a couple ofdrawbacks, but in general things end up working just that little bit faster.

Youll need a bit of free space on your phone. How muchdiffers depending on what apps you have installed, but if your phone is closeto full then you might want to free up some space before proceeding.

Listen to Podcasts easily on Android

If theres one gaping hole in the Android experience, its thesignificant lack of podcast support. Where Apple has built a podcast functionright in to iTunes through which you can stream countless free shows, andMicosoft has done the same with its Podcasts app, Androids have no suchfeature. The Google Play store doesnt even have a podcasts section.

"Wait!" You may say. "The Google All Access service has plentyof podcasts on it." That is true, but were not big fans of paying up to $1.60 perepisode for podcasts that are not only free through other mediums, but werealways intended to be free by their creators.

What is iMessage?

New to the iOS operating system? Although there's a lot to take in, one of the coolest and simplest features is Apple's iMessage, which works as an alternative to old-school text messages.

iMessage works between Apple devices - iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch running iOS 5 or higher, and Apple Macs running Mountain Lion software - and is pretty similar to regular text messaging. The big difference is that it uses your devices data connection to send and receive messages (so through Wi- Fi or cellular data such as 3G or LTE), rather than using your carriers network service.

BYO phones: How to take your phone to another carrier and save money

Weve been championing thebenefits of a BYOD cellphone plan for a while now if youve got a handset that youre still happy with, but want to ditch your current carrier, keeping your old device instead of buying a new smartphone on a contract can result in big savings.

But the problem here in the US is that the carriers themselves arent making it easy for customers to take their handsets to a rivals network. Differing technologies and phone unlocking policies mean it can be confusing determining if your smartphone will work with a different network.

Theres a lot of emphasis by wireless networks on upgrading, updating and keeping up with whats new and overhyped in technology. But unlessyoure a serious fan of technology with an attention deficit disorder, for mostpeople frequently jumping to a new phone is both unnecessary and unnecessarily costly.

Major carriers and smaller companies renting space on theirnetworks known as MVNOs all offer plans for customers who would ratherforgo a new handset and two-year contract, and supply their own device.

Apple Found Guilty of Anti-Competitive Practices in Taiwan

A Taiwan court has found Apple guilty of anti-competitive practices and will fine the company T$20 million or about $647,124 USD, reports Reuters.

The island's Fair Trade Commission had previously levied the fine against the Silicon Valley firm for requiring its major Taiwan telecom partners to receive approval for pricing plans for its wildly popular iPhone series in advance of public release, in violation of Taiwanese law. Apple subsequently countersued and lost the suit.

"Apple limited telecoms from setting contract price for its 4, 4S, 5 and 5S models, which is against the law," commission spokesman Chiu Yung-ho told Reuters.
