Phone features that are actually useful

Manufacturers need ways to distinguish their phones from thecompetition. There used to be a time where all that you needed to pay attentionto was screen quality, camera, processor power and what OS it came running on.

Now that every flagship phone is a veritable powerhouse, hasat worst a pretty darn good camera, and 1080p isnt even the best resolutionaround; manufactures are turning to more-unique features.

Is the Vodafone network better than before?

Youve probably heard about the problems Vodafone has faced over the past few years, and chances are you know someone who was personally affected. Back in 2010, Vodafone technicians faced a perfect storm of technical issues combined with an unexpected increased demand on the network and, in short, the whole thing fell over.

These technical hurdles were overcome within weeks, but the damage to the Vodafone name in Australia has been damaged in a way that has taken years to repair. Australians love smartphones, so when a network turned our favourite tools into paperweights, the response was fierce and hard to forget.

Boost Mobile vs Amaysim

If youre looking for an alternative to the big four telcos in Australia, youve probably considered two of the most popular MVNO choices: Boost Mobile and Amaysim. But what is the difference between these two solid service provider options?

The first and most important difference is that Boost and Amaysim operate on different networks. Boost operates in partnership with Telstra and runs on the Next G network. This is known as a 3.5G network with max download speeds up to 42Mbps. It is not as fast as a 4G network, but most phone owners will find it is more than faster enough.

Best phones for the new Telstra and Optus 4G 700MHz networks

The new 700MHz 4G networks from Optus and Telstra promiseimprovements to range and indoor coverage for 4G users, but willyour phone work with it? Not all phones are 700MHz compatible.

So, which ones work and which are the best? Both Optus andTelstra have a great range of phones and, luckily, quite a few of them work on700MHz.

Telstra calls its 700MHz network 4GX, which is a referenceto not only its superior speed, but also that Telstra owns enough contiguousbandwidth to offer category 6 (CAT6) 4G LTE. CAT6 is a quicker method ofproviding 4G, which makes the 4GX network the fastest in Australia. It hasnothing to do with the 700MHz frequency other than that it happens to be the frequency onwhich Telstra chose to implement CAT6.

Rollover credit: who still has it and how does it work?

In the majority of cases, we talk about mobile phone plans in months. You pay 'X amount' and the telco gives you 'Y value' for a 30-day period. But in some circumstances your plan's inclusions last longer than just one month and roll over into the next month.

Rollover credit used to be more common on mobile plans, but in the days of 'unlimited' plans and heavy data inclusions, many telcos have reverted to a fixed expiry periods for unused plan inclusions. However, there are still a few exceptions. Rollover credit is most useful when you have varying usage patterns between months. You can store your under-usage of a plan amount in one month and have that provide you with extra usage the following month.
